A Nigerian man who identified as a former Yahoo boy has shared how he abandoned internet fraud after years of struggling to make money from it.
The man, identified on X as @hintrovertt, recounted his experience while reflecting on how changing his approach to life eventually improved his situation.
‘I Started Yahoo in 2020’
The man revealed that he started internet fraud in 2020 but claimed he failed to make any significant money from it for years.
“I started Yahoo in 2020. Fast forward to 2022, I didn’t cash out $1,” he wrote.
According to him, one of his friends started the same lifestyle in 2022 and quickly began making money, buying an iPhone 12 and enjoying what appeared to be a lavish lifestyle.
He admitted that seeing his friend’s success made him question why he was struggling.
‘I Thought Maybe It Was Because I Didn’t Add Juju’
The former Yahoo boy said he eventually became convinced that he needed to add juju, a term commonly used to refer to traditional or spiritual practices, to his activities.
“That same 2022, a friend of mine started, bought an iPhone 12, and was balling. I thought maybe it was because I didn’t add juju,” he stated.
He claimed that he subsequently borrowed money to carry out what he called “soap”, but his efforts still yielded little.
“I borrowed money to do soap, only to cash out $100. I used that $100 to buy an iPhone 6, not knowing that was the last money I was ever going to cash out,” he recalled.
‘I Got Depressed and Lonely’
The man said his inability to make money while his friends appeared to be succeeding affected him emotionally.
“By then my friends were balling. I got depressed. Lonely. I started smoking just to escape reality, because things were too tough,” he wrote.
He claimed that he continued trying to make money through internet fraud but remained unsuccessful.
“I kept doing soap and it still didn’t work for me,” he stated.
At some point, he began questioning whether he was affected by a family curse or simply not destined to succeed.
“I started thinking maybe I had a family curse, or I just wasn’t destined to make it in life,” he added.
‘August 2024, I Gave Up’
After years of struggling, the man said he eventually abandoned internet fraud in August 2024 and took up conventional employment.
“August 2024, I gave up. I went and started a 9-5,” he wrote.
According to him, his fortunes later changed after he decided to take his X account more seriously in late 2025.
‘Now I Don Guide Pass Almost All My Friends’
The former Yahoo boy said he eventually got his X account monetised and began making progress through the platform.
“Fast forward to late 2025, I decided to take my X account serious. I got monetized. Now I don guide pass almost all my friends that were doing Yahoo back then,” he stated.
Reflecting on his experience, he said his story taught him that failure in one area of life does not necessarily mean that something is fundamentally wrong with a person.
“The point of this post is simple: sometimes nothing is wrong with your life. You just need to change your ways,” he concluded.
His post has since sparked reactions online, with users discussing his decision to abandon internet fraud and pursue legitimate means of making a living.
