IGP Disu approves fresh investigation into Mohbad’s death

The family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has secured approval from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, disclosed this in a statement dated September 29, 2026, clarifying that the police re-investigation remains ongoing despite the recent dismissal of a separate suit by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

According to Ogungbe, the Aloba family submitted its petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026, and it was received at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7.

The petition raised concerns about inconsistencies in the previous investigation and requested a comprehensive forensic reconstruction of the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.

The lawyer explained that the IGP approved the petition and forwarded it to the Lagos State Police Command, where it was assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau for further investigation. A representative of the family has also met with the new investigative team.

The development comes after the Federal High Court dismissed Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026 on September 25. However, Ogungbe stressed that the suit was separate from the family’s petition and was neither filed by the Aloba family nor authorised by it.

The family maintained that the court’s dismissal did not terminate the police investigation initiated through its petition.

It also pledged to cooperate with investigators by providing relevant documents, information, witnesses and other materials that could assist the probe.

The family urged the police to conduct the investigation with diligence, independence and professionalism while examining all relevant persons and circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.
