Nigerian army thwarts terrorists’ plot to cause havoc in Zamfara, Katsina

The Nigerian Army has announced that its Sector 2 troops, part of Operation Fansan Yamma, successfully neutralised 9 terrorists, including 2 key figures, and seized 4 AK-47 rifles and 9 motorcycles during a series of operations conducted from May 1 to May 3, 2026, across Katsina and Zamfara states.

According to the statement, the troops stationed at the Forward Operating Base Fudma in Katsina State encountered terrorists while on a fighting patrol along the Turare–Yantumaki Road in the Dutsinma Local Government Area of Katsina State.

A statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 8th Division, indicated that during the ensuing firefight, the troops neutralised 4 terrorists and recovered 2 AK-47 rifles, along with 2 magazines, several rounds of ammunition, 2 motorcycles, 7 mobile phones, and a total of one hundred and fifty-three thousand naira.

Additionally, it was reported that in a separate operation in Zamfara State between May 2 and May 3, 2026, troops at the Forward Operating Base Bagega conducted a high-stakes operation in the Anka Local Government Area, resulting in the neutralisation of seven terrorists, including 2 notorious kingpins known as Anaruwa and Gomina. Anaruwa is identified as the younger brother of Kachalla Idi Aiki, a recognised terrorist commander.

The army further stated that during the initial operation on May 2, 2026, troops from the Bagega Forward Operating Base engaged terrorists along the Bagega–Anka Road in a firefight.

The initial clash compelled 4 armed terrorists on 2 motorcycles to retreat, abandoning their bikes; however, the terrorists regrouped and launched a counterattack on the Forward Operating Base Bagega.

It was explained that following reinforcements from various combat teams and support from precision airstrikes by the air component, the troops successfully repelled the assault. A second wave of 8 terrorists on 4 motorcycles was engaged, resulting in the neutralisation of 3 terrorists. During the follow-up operation, troops recovered 2 AK-47 rifles with loaded magazines and 7 motorcycles.

He explained further that during a follow-on operation on 3 May 2026, troops encountered 2 additional terrorists on motorbikes in the same area, who were neutralised on the spot. Tragically, one soldier paid the ultimate sacrifice during the operation.

It said that the troops have consolidated their presence in Bagega, maintaining dominance over the area to prevent further threats. Operation Fansan Yamma reaffirms its dedication to protecting citizens and urges the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
