A group of former university classmates has reacted with shock after a financial support they raised for an unemployed colleague reportedly ended in controversy over his wedding plans and further monetary demands.
The man, in a viral account shared within the group, revealed that his coursemates contributed ₦1.2 million to help him learn a skill or start a small business after being jobless for six years. The aim was to help him regain financial stability.
₦1.2 million support for unemployed classmate
According to the account, the group pooled funds out of concern for his welfare and future prospects. The contribution was intended strictly as empowerment support, not personal consumption.
Members believed the gesture would help him become self-reliant and reduce long-term financial dependence. The initiative was widely seen as a show of solidarity among former classmates.
Wedding announcement sparks tension
However, tension reportedly began when the beneficiary later informed the group that he was planning to get married.
He said he decided it was the right time to wed his girlfriend of four years since he now had “a little money.”
The announcement surprised several members, who did not expect the funds to be linked to personal wedding plans. The group initially remained silent as reactions built up.
Group removed him after fresh demand
Matters escalated when he later sent another message requesting additional financial support, stating that his wedding budget stood at ₦3.2 million.
He appealed to the group for help in completing the wedding expenses, prompting widespread displeasure among members.
Shortly after, the group reportedly removed him from the WhatsApp group.
