Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting religious institutions that promote peace, unity and development across the state.
Makinde stated this at the 120th anniversary celebration of the First Baptist Church, Idikan, Ibadan.
The governor, who congratulated the church and the Nigerian Baptist Convention on the milestone, described the First Baptist Church, Idikan, as a historic institution that had made significant contributions to the spiritual and moral development of Oyo State.
“I congratulate First Baptist Church, Idikan, on the celebration of 120 years. My prayer is that the glory of the next 120 years will surpass the past 120 years. Thank you, and God bless you,” he said.
Makinde commended the leadership, pastors and members of the church for their commitment to the propagation of the gospel, community service and nation-building over the past 120 years.
He said faith institutions had an important role to play in fostering peace and unity, adding that his administration would continue to support initiatives that contribute positively to the development of the state.
At the ceremony, the President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, Rev. Dr. David Olushola Idowu, presented an award to Governor Makinde.
Idowu expressed appreciation to the governor for identifying with the church in celebrating the anniversary, as well as for his support for the propagation of the gospel.
He particularly acknowledged Makinde’s donation of a Hummer bus to the church, saying the gesture would support the church’s evangelical activities.
Special prayers were also offered for Makinde, Oyo State and Nigeria during the anniversary celebration.
The event was attended by a former President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention and former National President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Dr. Samson Supo Ayokunle; President of the Ibadan Baptist Conference, Rev. Dr. Oyekola Bamidele; Minister in Charge of First Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Solomon Oyelami; Chief Niyi Akintola, SAN; and other dignitaries.
