The 1976 set of Lagelu Grammar School (LAGRAMS), Agugu, Ibadan, on Saturday commissioned a renovated Primary Healthcare Centre at the school as part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of their Alma Mater.
The commissioning ceremony, held at the school premises, brought together members of the 1976 set, old students, government officials, traditional rulers, staff, students, spouses and other stakeholders for a reunion and celebration of the set’s golden jubilee.
The renovated facility is equipped with a solar power system and a motorised borehole to support the effective operation of the health centre and provide essential healthcare services to students and members of the surrounding community.
In his welcome address, Chairman of the Lagelu Grammar School 1976 Set, Alhaji Gbolagade Agboluaje, expressed gratitude to God for preserving members of the set and allowing them to contribute to the development of their alma mater and the wider community.
Agboluaje said the project was financed through the collective contributions of members of the set in Nigeria and the diaspora, as well as friends and other well-wishers.
He commended the National President of the Lagelu Grammar School Old Students Association, Ambassador Kadiri Adewale Abass, for his commitment to the development of the school.
Agboluaje also lauded the Chairman of the Primary Healthcare Centre Project Committee, Pastor Ellis Gbenga Fagbami, and members of the committee for their dedication and commitment to the successful completion of the project.
According to him, the 1976 set had previously contributed to the development of the school by renovating the biology laboratory in 2018 and organising a health week in 2023, sponsored by CeSAHA, a global health initiative headed by one of the set members, Dr Babatunde Fakunle.
He added that the set had also consistently supported some students of the school by paying their Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination fees.
The chairman, however, noted that more work remained to be done, stressing that the facility could not become fully functional as a primary healthcare centre until it was properly equipped and staffed.
He, therefore, called on the government, alumni, stakeholders and well-wishers to support the initiative by providing the necessary medical equipment and human resources.
Speaking at the commissioning, the Chairman of the project committee, Pastor Ellis Gbenga Fagbami, said additional medical items would be provided to enable the facility to serve its intended purpose.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Oyo State Ministry of Health, Dr Oyewole Tunde Aremu, who represented the Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, commended the LAGRAMS ’76 Set for its thoughtfulness and commitment to giving back to the school.
Aremu said the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde had assured the school that the facility would be equipped with modern medical equipment and materials to make it fully functional.
He said the gesture would enable the health centre to provide healthcare services for the benefit of students, teachers, alumni and residents of the Agugu community.
The Permanent Secretary assured the gathering that the state government would support the initiative, stressing the importance of functional healthcare facilities in schools and communities.
