Ondo: Cockpit voice recorder found intact in Igbokoda crash

The Nigerian Air Force has recovered the Cockpit Voice Recorder from the wreckage of its ATR-42 aircraft that went down in Igbokoda, Ondo State, with engineers confirming the device survived the impact intact.

The recovery was announced on Friday by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, who said teams from the Air Force and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau had verified the recorder’s condition.

“Additional aircraft wreckage, engine components and human remains have also been recovered,” he said.

Part of the Flight Data Recorder, the second component of the so-called black box, has also been pulled from the site, though the remaining portion is still being sought.

Beyond the flight recorders, searchers have retrieved additional wreckage, engine parts and human remains.

The operation is being conducted in difficult swampy terrain, and Ejodame said teams were working to recover the outstanding components needed for technical examination. He added that human remains are being handled with care, with the Directorate of Identification and Classification conducting the identification procedures.

“The ultimate objective is not only to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident but also to draw the necessary lessons to strengthen flight safety, enhance ongoing airpower operations and further safeguard the lives of personnel and citizens,” he said.

He said the goal is not only to establish what caused the accident but to draw the lessons needed to strengthen flight safety, support ongoing airpower operations and protect the lives of personnel and citizens.

Ejodame said the NAF would continue to issue verified updates.
