The Order of the Knights of Saint Mulumba Nigeria (KSM) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Archbishop of Benin City, Most Rev. Dr Augustine Obiora Akubeze, describing his death as a great loss to the Catholic Church and the nation. The Order extended its heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), priests, religious, and the faithful, and prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.
In a condolence message signed by the KSM Supreme Knight, Sir Steve Adehi SAN, CKSM, KCSS, the notable Catholic organisation described the late Archbishop as a courageous preacher of the Gospel, a compassionate shepherd, and a steadfast advocate of justice, peace, and human dignity. It noted that his episcopal ministry was marked by humility, wisdom, integrity and an unwavering commitment to evangelisation and the spiritual growth of the faithful.
The Order further commended Archbishop Akubeze’s leadership within the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, noting that he consistently called for justice, accountability, reconciliation and respect for the sanctity of human life during a defining period in the country’s history. KSM also expressed gratitude for his fatherly support of Catholic knighthood, saying he inspired members to serve with conviction, charity, discipline and fidelity to the teachings of the Church.
According to the Order, his enduring legacy of faith, pastoral charity and selfless service will continue to inspire generations.
Archbishop Akubeze served the Catholic Church in various capacities and was widely respected for his unwavering commitment to the Gospel and his prophetic voice on national issues. Throughout his ministry, he remained a strong advocate of justice, peace and good governance, earning admiration within the Church and beyond.
KSM prayed that Christ, whom the late Archbishop served faithfully throughout his life, would grant him eternal rest and asked God to comfort the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria and the entire Church in Nigeria as they mourn his passing.
