Kano govt deploys DSS, EFCC to monitor fertiliser distribution, warns against diversion

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced the deployment of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to monitor the distribution of 150 trailers of fertiliser across the state, warning that anyone involved in diverting the farm inputs will face prosecution.

The governor made the announcement on Thursday during the flag-off of the fertiliser distribution programme for the 2026 farming season in Kano.

Yusuf said the security agencies had been brought into the exercise to ensure that the fertiliser reached genuine farmers across the state’s 44 local government areas and to prevent diversion by unscrupulous individuals.

He warned that anyone found diverting the fertiliser would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

“As the governor, I cannot be everywhere to ensure that the distribution of the 150 trailers of fertiliser reaches all the intended beneficiaries,” he said.

“The government will not tolerate any form of corrupt act involving the diversion of the product, and anyone found culpable will face the consequences.”

The governor described the annual fertiliser distribution as one of the key promises made during his election campaign, noting that his administration had consistently fulfilled the commitment over the past three years.

According to him, the initiative is aimed at supporting farmers, increasing agricultural productivity and strengthening food security in Kano State.

Yusuf urged officials overseeing the distribution to ensure transparency and fairness so that only genuine farmers benefit from the programme.

He also appealed to residents to pray for favourable weather conditions and adequate rainfall to ensure a successful farming season and a bumper harvest, amid concerns over the possibility of drought.

The governor further called on the people of Kano to appreciate the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration while expressing satisfaction with his government’s achievements in the agricultural sector.

“We have done well in the last three years and have fulfilled our campaign promises to the people as far as the distribution of fertiliser is concerned,” he said.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr Mahmoud Abubakar, said farmers in the state had benefited from several interventions under the current administration, including the provision of high-yield seeds and other agricultural inputs.

He added that the government was finalising arrangements to launch mechanised farming equipment to further support agricultural production and enhance food security across the state.
