Rescue and search operations are ongoing after a building collapsed on Abidjan Street, Wuse Zone 3, Abuja, on Monday evening, September 7, 2026.
The FCT Police Command said it received a distress call at approximately 7:45 p.m. and immediately deployed a response team to the scene.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the team was led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, ACP Edward Akaniyene, and the Area Commander, Metro, ACP Georgelyn Ufomadu.
They were joined by personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA, Federal Fire Service, FFS, the Security Service Department of the FCTA, and other emergency agencies.
“The team… immediately commenced rescue and search operations at the scene,” the statement said.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the collapsed building had earlier been marked and sealed by the Department of Development Control, Abuja.
As of the time of the statement, no victims had been confirmed. However, authorities said search and rescue operations are still ongoing “to identify and rescue any persons who may be trapped in the rubble.”
“Further details on the extent of damage will be communicated in due time,” SP Adeh added.
The Command said investigation is still ongoing to determine the circumstances and possible cause of the collapse.
It urged residents to “remain calm and security-conscious, avoid the affected area, and cooperate with emergency responders to facilitate the ongoing rescue operations.”
