The Kano State House of Assembly has urged Governor Abba Yusuf to provide emergency assistance to residents of Shuwaki town in Tudun Wada Local Government Area following a heavy downpour that destroyed more than 200 rice farms and damaged key infrastructure.
The call followed a motion moved during Monday’s plenary by the member representing Tudun Wada Constituency, Sule Shuwaki. The sitting was presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Falgore.
Shuwaki said the heavy rain, which occurred last Thursday, caused flooding that destroyed more than 200 rice farms belonging to local farmers.
He said the flooding also washed away a historic bridge along the Tudun Wada-Shuwaki Road, disrupting movement and making it difficult for residents, including students, to access surrounding communities.
“The downpour which happened on Thursday has destroyed over 200 rice farms following flooding in Shuwaki. The flooding has also washed a bridge along Tudun Wada-Shuwaki Road,” he said.
According to the lawmaker, the damaged bridge has disrupted economic activities in the area and restricted farmers’ access to their fields.
He urged the state government to provide relief materials and other forms of assistance to affected farmers and residents.
“We are appealing to the state government to come to the aid of the affected farmers and other residents affected by flooding to alleviate their sufferings,” Shuwaki said.
He also called for the immediate reconstruction of the damaged bridge and road to restore access between Shuwaki and neighbouring communities.
The motion, seconded by the member representing Gezawa Constituency, Abdullahi Kara, was adopted by the House, which subsequently urged the state government to take prompt action.
