The residence of the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Adewale Egbedun, has reportedly been surrounded by security operatives, in what is believed to be a developing security operation ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in the state.
The operatives, who were reportedly dressed in police uniforms, allegedly arrived at the Speaker’s residence in more than 10 black Hilux vehicles and cordoned off the premises.
The development has raised concerns among political stakeholders in the state, coming less than 24 hours before the governorship poll.
The Imole Campaign Council, in a statement, said it made attempts to contact senior police officers as well as the Police Situation Room to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported deployment, but said its efforts were unsuccessful.
The council expressed concern over what it described as the need to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process, urging security agencies and political actors to ensure that Saturday’s election is conducted peacefully and without intimidation, fear or undue interference.
It also called on residents, political parties and other stakeholders to remain calm, obey the law and avoid actions capable of escalating tension across the state.
The council urged the relevant authorities to provide a clear explanation regarding the reported presence of security personnel at the Speaker’s residence.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the Osun State Police Command or other security agencies confirming the operation or explaining the reason for the reported deployment.
