Godswill Akpabio, president of the senate has declared the seat of Ondo South senatorial district vacant, paving the way for a fresh by-election.
The announcement was made during plenary on Tuesday at the National Assembly, Abuja, where lawmakers deliberated on the development.
According to him, the declaration followed the appointment of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who previously occupied the seat, as Nigeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations.
The senate president called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a by-election within the next 30 days to fill the vacancy, in line with extant laws.
Akpabio also directed the Clerk to the National Assembly to transmit the Senate’s resolution to the Independent National Electoral Commission for urgent action.
