India: Muslim throws acid at his ex-wife for refusing to marry another man, be divorced by him so they could remarry

Nikah halala is one of the most bizarre and revolting aspects of Islamic law. It is a temporary marriage that allows a woman to return to her previous husband after a divorce. If her husband says “I divorce you” to her three times, she can’t return to him unless and until she marries another man, consummates the marriage, and is in turn divorced by the new husband. This is based on the Qur’an. Allah’s regulations for divorce emphasize regarding women that “men are a degree over them” (Qur’an 2:228). This may be why men can divorce their wives simply by saying, “Talaq” — You are divorced, or I divorce you. Such an easy procedure leads to divorces in a fit of pique, followed by reconciliation — and the Qur’an anticipates this and attempts to head it off by stipulating that a husband who divorces his wife three times cannot reconcile with her until she marries another man and is in turn divorced by him: “And if he has divorced her, then she is not lawful to him after that until she has married another husband. Then if he divorces her, it is no sin for both of them that they come together again, if they think that they are able to observe the limits of Allah. These are the limits of Allah. He shows them to people who have knowledge.” (Qur’an 2:230).

Bareily: A man first divorced his wife with ‘Teen Talaq’ and then forced her to undergo ‘halala’ to marry her again as per Islamic law and denying that, he attacked her with acid, reported Dainik Bhaskar.

The police have started an investigation into the matter. The acid with which the man attacked his ex-wife was reportedly a toilet-cleaning acid. The police said that they have sent the sample to labs to confirm it.

In search of the accused husband Ishaq, the police are raiding his and his relatives’ houses along with acquaintances. The police are unable to find his location as Ishaq’s mobile phone is switched off.

The condition of the victim is now stated to be out of danger.

After the echo of this matter reached the Chief Minister, the government asked for a report of this acid incident.

The victim reportedly told the police that her ex-husband Ishaq had come on the pretext of talking to her. He was forcing her to undergo ‘halala’. When she refused, he started verbally abusing her and her family.

The victim said that when he had entered the house with acid in the bag, she inquired suspiciously, he said that he is taking goods for the house. Ishaq had threatened to throw acid earlier as well….

The accused ex-husband of the victim was the son of her mother’s brother. He had divorced her three weeks before the acid attack. For the past few days, he had been forcing his ex-wife to undergo halala and get married again.
