Presidential candidate Peter Obi has dismissed a recent report attributing to him a statement that Nigerian soldiers should reject any salary increase until after the 2027 General Election, describing the claim as entirely false.
Obi, in a statement on Tuesday, said he holds the Nigerian military and other security forces in high regard, stressing that he has consistently advocated adequate equipment, motivation and protection for personnel who risk their lives to defend the country.
“My profound respect for our security forces, particularly the Nigerian Army personnel who diligently serve and protect our nation under challenging conditions, is unwavering,” he said.
He recalled his concern over the loss of soldiers to insurgents following a delayed rescue effort, saying the incident raised questions about why those defending Nigerians could themselves be left vulnerable when they needed assistance.
“My concern was palpable when soldiers were lost to insurgents due to a delayed rescue effort, prompting me to question how those defending us could be left vulnerable in their time of need,” Obi said.
He pledged that, if elected president, the welfare, resources, safety and dignity of members of the armed forces would be among his administration’s priorities.
“Should I be elected President, the well-being, resources, safety, and honour of our soldiers will be a paramount priority. Those who ensure Nigeria’s security must never be relegated to a secondary concern,” he said.
According to him, soldiers deserve the “utmost respect, unwavering support, and a government that will unequivocally stand by them.”
He further pledged that under his leadership, situations in which Nigerian servicemen and women are left without adequate protection in the face of danger would be eliminated.
Obi urged Nigerians to disregard the report, describing it as misleading, and reiterated his commitment to presenting what he described as a clear and consistent vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria.
“The realisation of a new and secure Nigeria is indeed POssible,” he said.
