“I hope he doesn’t contest again” — Soyinka questions Obi’s leadership suitability

Renowned Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, has stirred fresh political debate after expressing reservations about the leadership suitability of Peter Obi ahead of Nigeria’s next general election.

Soyinka made the remarks during a recent public engagement, where he reflected on Obi’s political conduct and the behaviour of his supporters.

His comments have since triggered widespread reactions across political circles and social media platforms, with supporters and critics weighing in on the controversial statement.

Concerns over supporters’ conduct

Soyinka argued that Obi’s perceived encouragement of certain behaviours among his followers raises concerns about his leadership capacity.

According to him, the tone and actions of a political movement often reflect the character and direction of its leader.

“I hope for the sake of the nation that Peter Obi doesn’t express interest in the next election. If there’s any proof that he is unfit to lead the country, it is in the conduct he encourages among his followers,” Soyinka stated.

Recalling past encounter

The literary icon also recounted a previous meeting with Obi, noting that his initial impression was one of calmness and diplomacy, which he now finds inconsistent with current developments.

When he first came to visit me, I watched his action and body language; it seemed to be conciliatory,” he added.

Soyinka had previously commented on the 2023 elections, urging political actors to prioritise national unity. Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, was a key contender in that election, gaining significant youth support nationwide.
