How Hayden Panettiere’s Mom ‘Lost It’ Over ‘Toxic’ Brian Hickerson Romance

Hayden Panettiere‘s mother disclosed details of her final conversation with her daughter about Brian Hickerson.

Lesley Vogel shared how she and the late actress did not see eye to eye over her relationship with her on-and-off boyfriend. She reflected on their conversations while explaining how the news of her daughter’s sudden death seemed surreal.

Hayden Panettiere’s mom was aware of the issues her daughter had during her relationship with Brian Hickerson, especially involving domestic violence. Vogel claims she was deeply concerned for her daughter, notwithstanding their estrangement.

Vogel has shared details that remained under wraps before her daughter’s death. She revealed that the actress’s relationship with Hickerson contributed to their second phase of estrangement. Vogel allegedly told Panettiere that their mother-daughter relationship could not continue if she kept seeing her on-and-off lover.

The mom of the late Hollywood star said the idea to give her daughter an ultimatum came from her therapist’s advice. “I needed it. I needed to have that pocket of time. Of course, I thought it was gonna be a pocket of time,” Vogel said of removing Panettiere from her life.

She said, during a recent appearance on “Good Morning America,” that she did not think “by any stretch of imagination” that her daughter would answer the ultimate call of nature anytime soon. Vogel confirmed that she was not on talking terms with Panettiere in the final months of her life because the actress maintained a relationship with Hickerson.

Vogel also recalled that a year ago, while she was spending time with her daughter, the “Heroes” alum wanted to end things with Hickerson. “She knew that Brian was toxic,” the 70-year-old said. “She knew she had to get him out of her life.”

Vogel explained that six weeks after their conversation, she noticed her daughter was pulling away, so she went back to her home in Florida. She later received a phone call from the “Nashville” star, who said she had reconciled with Hickerson.

“I just lost it,” Vogel revealed. “I could not believe she had gone that far back, that he had been successful in reeling her back in with all the things he had done to her.”  Vogel gave her daughter the ultimatum after hearing the news, which marked the beginning of their estrangement before Panettiere’s demise.

Speaking of their initial estrangement, which the late actress penned in her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” Vogel maintains her version of events is quite different from her daughter’s.

Panettiere claimed they cut ties after she told her mom she wanted to end their professional relationship. Her mom’s alleged response to that request was “You owe me!” and Vogel disputes the narrative.

The late actress’s mom claims that her daughter’s “toxic” boyfriend pawned some of her stuff before her death. The belongings Hickerson allegedly pawned include a vintage guitar. In addition, Vogel claims she was surprised to discover some of Panettiere’s possessions in Hickerson’s storage unit.

Vogel disclosed this in a recent interview with the New York Times, during which she also revealed that her daughter was struggling and in physical pain when she visited her last year. The media outlet reported that another source confirmed that Hickerson had pawned some of the late actress’s items. It was also reported that Hickerson filed for bankruptcy in 2022.

This joins the list of claims Vogel has made against Hickerson. She pointed out that there may be more to his account of the day of the superstar’s death. She also raised questions about the fact that the person who had physically abused her daughter was the one with her in the final moments of her life.

During Vogel’s sit-down with “GMA,” she got emotional as he recalled receiving the news of her daughter’s passing. She explained that dealing with the loss of her daughter is a process, and the reality of the Panettiere’s death will hit her later.

“I was just numb. I just couldn’t feel anything. I still am not grasping this is real. It just doesn’t, it doesn’t feel real,” she said in tears, admitting that her mind sometimes plays games with reality. This is the second death Vogel has had to deal with in three years. Her son Jansen tragically passed away in 2023 from an undiagnosed heart condition.

Speaking of navigating grief, Vogel noted that she is coping by drawing on her inner strength. As the pain of the tragic loss knocks her down, the mom of two is fixed on getting back up. The 70-year-old said she wants her late daughter to be remembered as a beautiful, talented, outgoing, and intelligent woman.

The late 36-year-old’s mother says investigators should look at Hickerson and his statement with a stronger lens. She revealed in a previous interview that she had pressured law enforcement agents in South Carolina to investigate Hickerson. Vogel stressed that the fact that he once served time for assaulting Panettiere should be taken into consideration.

Vogel explained that the “Ice Princess” star and Hickerson had a very toxic bond and an unhealthy relationship dynamic that was kept largely out of the spotlight. The Blast reports that Vogel highlighted that Hickerson left out vital information in his statement to the authorities about the day of Panettiere’s death.

The late actress’s mom also noted that reports about the presence of Narcan at the scene of her daughter’s death were disturbing. To Vogel, it raised eyebrows that Hickerson had administered it to the TV star, according to his brother, Zach.
