Hakeem Baba-Ahmed Justifies Zoning Senate Presidency to the North, Citing Tinubu’s Win

Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the Director of Publicity of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), supports the idea of zoning the Senate Presidency to the North. He believes that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory in the February 25, 2023 Presidential election was largely due to the support he received from the North. Dr. Baba-Ahmed asserts that the North has the right to demand the position of the Head of the third arm of the Government, emphasizing the principles of equity and fairness.

During an interview on Arise Television, Dr. Baba-Ahmed reiterated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would not have been able to defeat Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) without the backing of the North. He highlighted that despite the North having its own candidate, the former Lagos governor managed to secure approximately 60 percent of the votes in the region. Dr. Baba-Ahmed also pointed out that since the Chief Justice of Nigeria is from the South, it is reasonable for the North to seek leadership in the third arm of the Government.

Furthermore, Dr. Baba-Ahmed defended the call for the zoning of the Senate Presidency to the North by drawing attention to a similar demand made by Nyesom Wike, the former Governor of Rivers State, for a Southern Senate Presidency. He argued that if such a demand is acceptable from the South, it should also be deemed appropriate coming from the North. Dr. Baba-Ahmed expressed the view that the decision of who should lead the lawmakers should be left to the lawmakers themselves.
