Cross River State governor, Bassey Otu has urged journalists to remain truthful, objective and professional in their reportage for the growth of democracy and public trust.
Otu gave the charge yesterday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Press Centre in Calabar, while inspecting a 15 KVA solar-powered inverter he donated to the union.
Represented by the Commissioner for Information, Dr Erasmus Ekpang, he said he values honesty, describing himself as a straight-forward leader committed to transparency and open engagement with the media.
He noted that his support for information management reflects his recognition of the media’s critical role in shaping public perception and governance.
He commended journalists for their resilience, saying their reports had projected the state positively, despite criticisms and differing public opinions.
“Criticism is healthy, as it keeps government activities in the public domain and encourages accountability and balanced narratives.
“Media reports have helped audiences filter developments in the state, highlighting progress, while acknowledging challenges,” he noted
He appreciated journalists for their support and encouragement since he assumed office, noting improved collaboration over time.
He also assured the union of continued engagement, urging them to channel concerns appropriately for prompt attention and resolution.
The commissioner also pledged to put in place welfare support for journalists, especially during festive periods, acknowledging their importance in the information ecosystem.
