The victim wasn’t celebrating diversity enthusiastically enough. Note also that they don’t seem to have considered their violence to be incompatible with their prayer. Now, why is that?

“Court sentenced Islamists to more than three years in prison,” translated from “Gericht verurteilt Islamisten zu mehr als drei Jahren Haft,” by Stephanie Lettgen, Welt, December 3, 2021 (thanks to Medforth):

A 28-year-old who advertised the Islamic State (IS) on the Internet has been sentenced by the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court to imprisonment for a total of three and a half years. According to a spokesman on Friday, the court in Hamburg saw it as proven that the German published pictures, texts and videos on Instagram in three cases in the summer of 2020, calling for jihad (holy war) against people of different faiths. The users of the media should be encouraged to be trained as fighters by IS in Syria or Iraq and to go into the religious war.

The 28-year-old had already been sentenced to one year and four months imprisonment by the St. Georg District Court for collective bodily harm on March 25th of this year – this was included in the total sentence now imposed. Together with two co-defendants, he prayed in October 2020 in a courtyard entrance of a Hamburg apartment building. When a local resident asked the three men to let his car through, they beat him up.

The public prosecutor’s office, including the conviction by the local court, had demanded a total imprisonment of three years and three months. The defense pleaded for acquittal. Should it come to a conviction, the sentence should not exceed three years, was the demand.

During the trial that began in early August, the defendant was silent. The man had a “problematic” childhood, said the court spokesman. He didn’t learn a trade. In 2016 he was convicted of assault and was imprisoned for a time. After that, the defendant converted and radicalized himself. According to dpa information, findings from the Hamburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution also led to the conviction.
