First EP we dropped under Sony was a failure – Davido [Video]

Nigerian Grammy nominee, David Adeleke popularly known as Davido has opened up on the challenges that characterised his record deal with Sony Music.

Davido said the first Extended Play, EP, he released in partnership with Sony Music in 2016, was to him a big failure commercially.

In a recent interview on an episode of The Bridge Show, Davido spoke extensively about his experiences with the international record label.

The Omo Baba Olowo said the reason the project turned out to be a disappointment was due to a disconnect between his creative vision and the label’s direction.

Davido said the music management team were making music for him and it was not suitable because he lacked creative freedom.

He explained that he Sony got him to work with some of the best producers but because it failed, he decided to return to Nigeria after spending a year in Atlanta.

According to him, they did not understand his music, so he returned to his original producers that understood him and informed them of his plans to release hit songs, that birthed his smash single, IF.

Davido said; “When I first came, they put me with some producers, but it didn’t work out, we dropped an EP under Sony, my first project; ‘failure, failure’ to my standards. Some people might see it as success but to my standard that wasn’t it.”
