FCT police warn against vehicles without plate numbers, tinted glasses

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has warned motorists against the use of vehicles without valid licence plates, tinted glasses without permits, and vehicles with concealed, defaced or faded plate numbers.

The warning was issued by the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, according to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, on October 4, 2026.

Adeh said the warning also covers use of fake diplomatic plate numbers or use of such numbers by unauthorised persons, particularly persons driving SUVs except top government officials.

She said the proliferation of such vehicles has been observed to be used by criminal elements to evade detection and arrest during and after commission of offences.

“The Federal Capital Territory is a peculiar environment where the use of such vehicles poses significant security concerns, as it may hinder effective identification and tracking by law enforcement agencies,” she said.

The Commissioner has ordered arrest and immediate prosecution of offenders and directed all officers across the FCT to intensify enforcement and ensure strict compliance with extant laws governing vehicle identification and use of tinted glasses.

Officers were also directed to conduct operations professionally and refrain from using the exercise as a means of extortion.

The Command urged residents to support police operations and report suspicious vehicles or activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency numbers: 08032003913, 08028940883.
