The Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatubosun, has mourned the death of renowned journalist, author, historian and the Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oloye Lekan Alabi, describing his passing as a monumental loss to Ibadanland, Oyo State, and the Yoruba cultural heritage.
In a condolence message, Olatubosun said the late elder statesman devoted his lifetime to preserving, documenting, and promoting the rich history, traditions, and cultural values of the Yoruba people through his writings, public engagements, and advocacy for cultural renaissance.
He described the late Abese Olubadan as an outstanding ambassador of Yoruba culture whose contributions would continue to inspire generations.
“Oloye Lekan Alabi dedicated his life to preserving, documenting and promoting the rich history, traditions and cultural values of the Yoruba people. Through his writings, public engagements and advocacy for cultural renaissance, he became one of the foremost custodians of our heritage.
“Oloye Lekan Alabi lived a life of purpose and service. His passion for promoting our cultural identity, preserving our historical heritage, and projecting the image of Oyo State and Ibadanland remains unmatched. His passing has created a vacuum that will be difficult to fill,” Olatubosun said.

Describing the late elder statesman as an encyclopedia of Yoruba history, Olatubosun said his vast knowledge and commitment to cultural development made him a dependable reference point for scholars, government institutions and cultural enthusiasts.
“He was an encyclopedia of Yoruba history whose knowledge and commitment to cultural development made him a dependable reference point for scholars, government institutions, and cultural enthusiasts,” he said.
According to the commissioner, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism benefited immensely from Alabi’s wealth of knowledge, experience and support for initiatives aimed at promoting tourism and preserving the state’s cultural heritage.
“The Ministry of Culture and Tourism benefited immensely from his wealth of knowledge and experience. His counsel and unwavering support for initiatives aimed at promoting tourism and preserving our cultural heritage were invaluable,” he added.
Olatubosun extended condolences to Governor Seyi Makinde, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the Olubadan-in-Council, the Alabi family, the people of Ibadanland, members of the journalism profession, and lovers of Yoruba culture over the loss.
He prayed that Almighty God would grant the late cultural icon eternal rest and give his family, associates and the people of Oyo State the strength to bear the irreparable loss.
