The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, which occurred on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, Delta State, vowing that those responsible will be held accountable.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, psc(+), mnipr, mni, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on April 28, 2026.
According to preliminary reports, operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command had acted on credible intelligence from Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway concerning a suspect apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.
However, while efforts were underway to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in clear violation of established regulations, resulting in the suspect’s death.
Following the incident, the leadership of the Force directed the immediate transfer of the officer and his team to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they are to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary disciplinary measures and possible prosecution.
The Inspector-General of Police extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be served in accordance with the law. He also urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the disciplinary and legal processes take their course.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions, abuse of authority, and any conduct capable of undermining public trust.
