Edo celebrates World Tourism Day 2026, harps on AI, digital innovation

The Edo State Tourism Agency (EDSTA) has identified technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI) and the creative economy, as key to the future of tourism in Nigeria.

The agency’s Director-General, Lady Vivian Elabor, made this known as the state marked the 2026 World Tourism Day, observed last Monday under the theme, “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.”

As part of the celebration, EDSTA organised a road walk from the gate of the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA), followed by a symposium at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA).

Governor Monday Okpebholo hosted the event, while Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa and the Coordinator of the Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs Edesili Okpebholo Anani, attended as special guests of honor.

Elabor said the celebration provided an opportunity for the agency to explore how Edo State could use technology to showcase its rich culture, heritage, and tourist attractions to a wider global audience.

She said the focus was on how digital tools could help the state tell its story more effectively and create new opportunities through tourism and the creative economy.

The agency emphasized the importance of embracing technological innovation to promote Edo’s tourism potential and expand its reach.
