Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake says the economic hardship currently facing Nigerians is difficult but necessary for the country’s long-term economic transformation and stability.
Alake spoke in Abuja at the maiden edition of the Solid Minerals Excellence Awards (SOMEA), where he said the Federal Government was implementing reforms aimed at building a resilient economy, strengthening institutions, and reducing dependence on oil revenue.
According to the minister, the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains committed to pursuing reforms that previous governments avoided because of political resistance.
“Effective leadership must be driven by vision, knowledge and courage,” Alake said, adding that sustainable national development requires policies focused on long-term national interest rather than short-term political gains.
He compared the ongoing reforms to changes previously introduced in Lagos State, noting that although such measures initially faced criticism, they later resulted in stronger institutions, increased revenue generation, and economic growth.
The minister identified the mining sector as a key component of the administration’s economic diversification agenda under the Renewed Hope programme.
He said the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development had introduced reforms targeting illegal mining, weak regulations, insecurity, dormant licences, and lack of transparency within the sector.
According to him, the digitisation of mining operations and licensing processes has improved transparency, simplified access to licences, and encouraged greater investor participation.
Alake also said the government had expanded the Mining Marshals initiative by deploying more than 2,000 personnel nationwide to tackle illegal mining activities, resulting in arrests, prosecutions, and improved compliance among operators.
He stressed the importance of local mineral processing and value addition, saying domestic processing would support industrialisation, create jobs, and encourage technology transfer.
Earlier, Permanent Secretary of the ministry Yusuf Yabo said the awards ceremony reflected the government’s commitment to developing a globally competitive mining industry.
Also speaking, SOMEA President Oladunmi Owo said the initiative was designed to recognise contributions to reforms and sustainable development in the mining sector, while Omar Sahinolu emphasised responsible mining practices, transparent governance, and technological innovation.
The awards, themed “Unlocking the Future,” recognised individuals and organisations across categories including Leading Mining Company of the Year, Excellence in Sustainable and Safe Operations, and Outstanding Contribution to Sector Growth.
