Austria: Government financed ‘Islamist associations’ with COVID aid money

“FPÖ criticizes: Five million euros in Corona aid money went to Islamist associations,” translated from “FPÖ kritisiert: Fünf Millionen Euro an Corona-Hilfsgeldern flossen an islamistische Vereine,” Exxpress, April 5, 2023 (thanks to Medforth):

During the corona pandemic, the state spent huge amounts of aid, often not in a targeted manner, the Court of Auditors criticized only on Tuesday. Now it turns out that even Islamic associations with an extremist background, which the documentation center Political Islam warns against, have benefited from grants.

Non-profit organizations (NPO) were also generously provided with corona funds during the pandemic. For this purpose, the government has set up its own pot – the NPO support fund. Subsidies flowed from it to “non-profit organizations from all areas of life”, according to the homepage, “from the social sector to culture to sports, voluntary fire brigades or legally recognized religious communities”.

Around five million euros of this went to Islam associations in the past three years, some of which can clearly be assigned to political Islam, as the FPÖ is now criticizing. “This is a scandal and a real slap in the face of the Austrians!” says FPÖ Secretary General Christian Hafenecker.

As an example, the Freedom Party refers to the “Turkish-Islamic Union for Cultural and Social Cooperation in Austria”, ATIB for short. She received more than 700,000 euros. “Even the documentation center for political Islam of the federal government attests this organization in a basic report close connections to the state religious authority of Turkey and to the Erdogan party AKP,” emphasizes Hafenecker. “It is therefore simply incomprehensible that an essential arm of political Islam is being promoted with Corona aid at taxpayer expense.”
