The presidential campaigns of African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Atiku Abubakar and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Peter Obi are yet to announce their campaign councils, with both camps saying consultations are still underway.
The development comes shortly after the All Progressives Congress (APC) unveiled the leadership of its 2027 presidential campaign council, with former Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari appointed Director-General and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma named Secretary.
While the ruling party has moved ahead with the announcement of its campaign structure, Atiku’s camp has asked supporters and Nigerians to wait for the opposition candidate’s team to be finalised.
Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, said discussions over the composition of the campaign council were still ongoing and that details would be made public once decisions had been reached.
He explained that Atiku’s camp would not rush to announce names or other campaign arrangements while consultations remained ongoing.
Shaibu said the leadership of the council, its membership and the official commencement of the campaign would all be announced at the appropriate time.
He also disclosed that Atiku’s campaign was still working on its fundraising strategy, insisting that whatever framework is eventually adopted would comply with relevant laws.
According to him, the former vice president is currently more focused on engaging Nigerians on pressing national issues and explaining his policy alternatives.
Shaibu added that the campaign’s fundraising arrangements would be transparent, accountable and consistent with existing campaign-finance regulations.
Peter Obi’s Campaign Also Delays Council Announcement
The situation is similar in the camp of Peter Obi, where consultations are also being held over the structure and timetable of the NDC campaign.
NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, said the group would hold a meeting the following weekend before taking final decisions on the campaign council and the formal launch of its activities.

He disclosed that some prominent figures were expected to feature in the campaign structure, mentioning Professor Pat Utomi, Buba Galadima and Bishop Idahosa among those likely to be involved.
Director also said the campaign would seek to reach voters across the country rather than concentrate its activities in selected regions.
He stated that Obi’s team planned to visit all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with the possibility of returning to some states more than once.
However, he said the exact starting point and sequence of the campaign tour would only be determined after the planned meeting.
Both opposition camps have therefore opted to keep their campaign structures under wraps for now, even as the APC has already unveiled key members of its 2027 presidential campaign council.
