The Abia State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Livingston Nwakanma, who is accused of killing his mother, Mrs Nwaigbe Nwakanma, in Osaa Ukwu, Obingwa Local Government Area of the state.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday while the deceased was preparing food in her kitchen.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the arrest while responding to an inquiry.
According to Chinaka, officers attached to the Eastern Ngwa Divisional Police Headquarters were alerted to the incident through a distress call on September 19, 2026, and promptly responded.
She said officers found the woman unresponsive at the scene, adding that a medical professional subsequently confirmed her death.
The deceased’s remains were deposited at a morgue, according to the police.
Chinaka further said the suspect was rescued by police officers from a mob that had gathered at the scene and was taken to a hospital for medical attention.
The suspect is currently in police custody, while investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident continues.
Reports indicate that Nwakanma was allegedly experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the incident. The police have not, however, disclosed further details on the circumstances that led to the alleged killing.
