“3,218 ASPs Promoted To Deputy Superintendents Of Police” — PSC Approves 4,122 Promotions, Appoints Two DIGs And 10 AIGs

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the appointment of two Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) and the promotion of more than 4,000 senior police officers across various ranks in the Nigeria Police Force.

The approvals were granted during the commission’s plenary meeting presided over by its Chairman, Hashimu Argungu.

The Head of Protocol and Public Relations of the commission, Torty Kalu, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Thursday, October 29, 2026, in Abuja.

According to the statement, the newly appointed Deputy Inspectors-General of Police are Olaolu Adegbite, who heads the INTERPOL National Central Bureau in Abuja, and Dankombo Morris, who currently oversees the Zone 4 Police Headquarters in Makurdi, Benue State.

The commission also approved the promotion of 10 officers to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), 17 to Commissioner of Police (CP), 85 to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and several others to different senior ranks.

Kalu explained that the promotions followed successful examinations and oral interviews conducted by the Police Service Commission as part of its assessment of officers eligible for advancement.

He said the commission considered the officers’ performances during the promotion exercises before granting the approvals at its plenary meeting.

A breakdown of the promotions showed that 49 Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) were elevated to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), while 245 Superintendents of Police (SPs) were promoted to Chief Superintendent of Police.

Similarly, 498 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) were promoted to Superintendent of Police, while 3,218 Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) were elevated to Deputy Superintendent of Police.

The commission also approved the elevation of 85 officers to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police, alongside the promotion of 17 officers to Commissioner of Police and 10 others to Assistant Inspector-General of Police.

The figures provided in the statement indicate that 4,122 officers received promotions, excluding the two newly appointed Deputy Inspectors-General of Police.

This total is higher than the figure of more than 3,800 officers stated in the introductory portion of the announcement.

Providing details of the two newly appointed DIGs, Kalu said Adegbite is an experienced police officer who has held several important positions in law enforcement and security administration.

Adegbite, who currently serves as Head of the INTERPOL National Central Bureau in Abuja, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Russian Language from the University of Lagos.

He also obtained a Master of Arts degree in Philology from the Pushkin Institute in Moscow, Russia.

According to the PSC spokesperson, Adegbite is a recipient of the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) national honour.

He is also a member of the FBI National Academy Associates and an alumnus of the Harvard Kennedy School.

Kalu disclosed that Adegbite previously served as Director of Operations at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he was involved in law enforcement operations.

His appointment as Deputy Inspector-General of Police represents another stage in his career within the Nigeria Police Force.

The second newly appointed DIG, Dankombo Morris, is from Gombe State and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Maiduguri.

He also possesses a Diploma in Police Science.

According to the commission, Morris previously served as Commissioner of Police in Adamawa State before assuming responsibility for Zone 4 Police Headquarters in Makurdi.

His elevation to the rank of DIG places him among the senior officers in the leadership structure of the Nigeria Police Force.

The commission also released the names of the 10 officers promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police.

They are Omosanyin Olusegun, Ogbodo Ugobueze, Ohagwu Ndukwe, Taylor Olanrewaju, Regina Udoette, Afolabi Olutokunbo, Nwogoh Martin, Shetima Mohammed, Ibrahim Gotan and Danjuma Yahaya.

The newly promoted AIGs are expected to assume responsibilities appropriate to their new ranks within the police command structure, subject to deployment decisions by the appropriate authorities.

Kalu further identified the 17 officers promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police.

They are Nache Liman, Sirajo Salihu, Ayeleye Adegboyega, Isiaka Salau, Usman Adamu, Aminu Garba, Abdulkarim Waziri, Muhammad Adamu, Sani Nufawa, Bello Adamu, Okezie Chikezie, Aminu Gusau, Abiodun Onuoha, Salisu Fago, Adegoke Alani, Wuwa Muhammad and Benedict Agbo.

The promotion exercise also covered officers in other senior ranks, including Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners, Chief Superintendents, Superintendents and Deputy Superintendents of Police.

Among the officers who benefited from the exercise was the Police Public Relations Officer of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, Josephine Adeh, who was promoted to the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police.

Adeh’s elevation was among the 245 promotions approved from Superintendent of Police to Chief Superintendent of Police.

The PSC spokesperson explained that the promotions followed the completion of the commission’s assessment process, including examinations and oral interviews.

The Police Service Commission is constitutionally empowered to appoint, promote and exercise disciplinary control over members of the Nigeria Police Force, except the Inspector-General of Police, whose appointment and removal are governed by separate constitutional provisions.

The commission performs these functions as part of its responsibility for personnel administration and oversight within the police institution.

Its promotion exercises are intended to provide a framework for career progression and advancement through the various ranks of the force.

The latest approvals affect officers occupying different levels of the police hierarchy, from Assistant Superintendent of Police to Assistant Inspector-General of Police, alongside the appointment of two Deputy Inspectors-General.

The elevation of Adegbite and Morris is particularly notable because the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police is one of the highest positions within the Nigeria Police Force, immediately below that of the Inspector-General of Police.

DIGs form part of the force’s senior leadership and may be assigned responsibilities for major departments and other strategic areas of police administration.

The appointment of the two officers therefore adds to the senior leadership cadre of the force, while the wider promotion exercise advances thousands of other personnel across the country.

The commission did not announce specific deployment arrangements for the newly promoted officers in the statement.

However, the approvals mark the completion of another round of personnel advancement following the commission’s promotion examinations, interviews and plenary deliberations.
