2027: Why I shelved my presidential bid for Peter Obi — Kwankwaso opens up

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, has shed light on the reasoning behind his decision to set aside his own presidential bid in favour of Peter Obi.

Speaking to reporters at his Kano residence on Sunday, the former Kano State governor said his choice was anchored on three considerations: his confidence in Obi’s credibility, the ideological ground they share, and the need to preserve the understanding that power should rotate between Nigeria’s North and South.

Kwankwaso also used the occasion to advise Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential flagbearer, to reconsider any plan to contest the 2027 election, cautioning that doing so could destabilise the existing power-sharing framework.

According to him, the South is entitled to complete its tenure, and the ADC’s current trajectory risks introducing unnecessary confusion by fielding a northern candidate while it remains the South’s turn.

He argued that rather than enter the race, Atiku should throw his weight behind Obi so the South can finish its stint, after which power would naturally return to the North.

Kwankwaso further stressed that he and Obi are bound by common objectives and ideology, expressing confidence that they possess the strength to steer the country’s affairs effectively.
