Senator Says Anambra Governor’s Support for Tinubu Will Not Change Obi’s Standing Among Voters
Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, has maintained that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi remains more popular than Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, both in the state and across Nigeria.
Umeh made the statement on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, while reacting to Soludo’s reported decision to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the senator, Soludo’s political position would not necessarily translate into a shift in support away from Obi among voters in Anambra State.
“Today, no matter what Soludo does, Peter Obi will continue to be more popular than him, both in Nigeria and in Anambra State,” Umeh said.
The lawmaker also argued that the governor’s endorsement of Tinubu would not prevent Anambra residents from voting for Obi in the next presidential election.
Umeh cited the 2023 general election as evidence of Obi’s political support in the South-East, claiming that Obi secured overwhelming backing in Anambra State against candidates of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He further expressed the view that the political pattern witnessed in 2023 could be repeated in the South-East during the 2027 elections.
However, the extent to which political endorsements and past electoral performances will influence voting decisions in 2027 remains to be seen as the election approaches.
