APC Campaign Council Consults Northern Emirs as President Pledges Inclusivity if Re-Elected
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has promised to give traditional institutions a more prominent role in governance if he secures re-election in the 2027 presidential election.
The commitment was disclosed during consultations led by Senator Abdulaziz Yari, Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, with prominent traditional rulers in northern Nigeria.
According to a statement from the Yari Media Office, the visits formed part of the council’s nationwide engagement with traditional and political leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The delegation visited the palaces of the Emirs of Gwandu, Katsina, Daura and Zaria, seeking their prayers, blessings and counsel.
Yari Explains Purpose of Royal Visits
Speaking during the engagements, Yari said the consultations were intended to strengthen relationships with traditional institutions and build consensus ahead of the elections.
He emphasised that the campaign council was seeking the guidance and blessings of royal fathers rather than demanding political endorsements.
Yari also reaffirmed the APC’s stated commitment to working with traditional institutions, noting their roles in promoting peace, unity and stability across the country.
He said the council valued the moral authority and experience of traditional rulers in addressing community concerns and strengthening national cohesion.
Emirs Pray for Peace and National Unity
The traditional rulers reportedly offered prayers for peace, unity and the success of Nigeria’s democratic process.
The delegation included former Borno State Governor Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, former Kano State Governor Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, former Kebbi State Governor Senator Adamu Aliero, and former Zamfara State Governor Senator Sani Ahmad Yarima, among other dignitaries.
The consultations come as political parties and their leaders intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Tinubu’s pledge, as conveyed by the campaign council, places the role of traditional institutions in governance among the issues being discussed ahead of the polls.
