2027: APM backs Makinde for president, says Oyo governor can defeat Tinubu

The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has thrown its full weight behind Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, expressing confidence that he has what it takes to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

The opposition party also announced that it has completed the upload of its presidential, vice-presidential and National Assembly candidates’ details on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nomination portal, describing the move as a major step in its preparations for the next general election.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Monday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, disclosed that the submission was carried out in line with INEC’s electoral timetable.

According to him, the exercise covered the party’s presidential, vice-presidential, Senate and House of Representatives candidates across the country.

Yusuf said the successful upload reflects the APM’s determination to present what he described as competent and credible candidates capable of providing Nigerians with a fresh leadership option.

“We have uploaded details of our presidential, vice-presidential and National Assembly candidates as required by INEC. This marks another important milestone in our journey towards offering Nigerians a credible, competent and people-oriented alternative in the 2027 general elections,” he said.

He added that the party has intensified grassroots mobilisation nationwide and remains optimistic about its chances at the polls.

The APM spokesman described Governor Makinde as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished governors, insisting that his performance in Oyo State has prepared him for the nation’s highest office.

Yusuf argued that the governor’s record in governance, financial management and public service demonstrates his ability to tackle Nigeria’s mounting economic and security challenges.

According to him, Makinde represents a new generation of leaders capable of uniting Nigerians across political, ethnic and religious lines.

“Our presidential candidate stands out as a leader whose record speaks for itself. His achievements have earned him national recognition as one of Nigeria’s best-performing governors, and that is why Nigerians want him as president,” Yusuf stated.

He further praised Makinde’s prudent management of public resources, saying those same principles would guide an APM-led federal government.

The opposition party said it intends to focus on addressing the country’s most pressing challenges, including insecurity, unemployment, economic hardship and the soaring cost of living.

According to Yusuf, an APM administration would place the welfare of ordinary Nigerians at the centre of government policies.

He maintained that Makinde possesses the leadership qualities, competence and political will needed to rebuild the economy, restore public confidence and improve living conditions across the country.

“Across the country, citizens have expressed deep concerns about the rising cost of living, widespread insecurity, unemployment and declining economic opportunities. These are genuine concerns that require practical solutions and compassionate leadership, which only the APM can offer,” he said.

The party also claimed it is witnessing growing support nationwide following the emergence of several prominent political figures on its platform.

Yusuf singled out Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who is contesting for a Senate seat under the APM, describing him as an experienced politician whose presence would strengthen the party’s legislative agenda.

He expressed confidence that the party’s candidates across all levels would promote responsible governance if elected.

Taking a swipe at the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Yusuf accused President Tinubu’s administration of failing to effectively address Nigeria’s worsening security situation, economic difficulties and rising unemployment.

He argued that the country’s current realities have strengthened the case for a change in leadership in 2027.

According to him, the APM offers Nigerians a credible alternative built on accountability, competence and people-focused governance.

“The failures of the APC administration have made it clear that Nigeria needs a new direction anchored on competence, accountability and people-centred leadership, which only the APM can offer Nigerians,” Yusuf said.
