Your supporters are attacking me, caution them – Tinubu to Peter Obi
The All Progressives Congress (APC), presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has urged Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), to caution his supporters against propagating falsehoods about him.
Vanguard reports that he spoke through the Director Media and Communications, Tinubu Campaign Organisation, Bayo Onanuga, warning that “falsehood and disinformation will not win elections.”
The statement follows a report alleging that Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo asked Tinubu via a letter to support Peter Obi and focus on his health.
But Akufo-Addo debunked the report, and revealed that no such letter emanated from him or his office.
“I have written no such letter to the APC leader, and it will not occur to me to do so. Ghana and Nigeria boast of decades of cordial, strong and brotherly relations, and I am not going to be the one to interfere in the internal affairs and politics of Nigeria,” he tweeted on Tuesday.
However, according to the statement by Onanuga, Obi’s supporters were linked to the report as uncovered by content analysis.
“The Tinubu Campaign Organisation has appealed to the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi to call his supporters to order and to allow this election circle to be about issues that will advance the growth, progress and stability of Nigeria.
“We have found that the fake news about Akufo-Addo’s letter was first published on June 22 by a rogue platform, whose URL reads as worlsnews.space (sic) and site identity as World of News.
A content analysis of the site clearly showed that it is a Biafra news platform. The fake news was reposted on Facebook by Peter Obi Support Group, same day – a clear proof that Biafra campaigners and Peter Obi supporters are the same,” the statement said.
It may be recalled that sometime last month, Obi responded to claims of harrassment and bullying by his supporters online.
He said those who engaged on such underhanded tactics are not his supporters but paid saboteurs.
“Some of these people are not supporters but are paid by my opponents to infiltrate them in order to blame my supporters. People are being paid to say all sort of things about me, maligning my character,” Obi explained.
