World meteorology leaders to gather in Lagos Tuesday for three-day Hydromet Annual Meeting

All is set for this year’s Alliance for Hydromet Development Annual Meeting scheduled to take place in Lagos October 13 to 15 2026.

The event, to be hosted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), at Eko Hotels and Suites, is at the instance of the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and would bring together leaders from the world meteorological Organization and other member institutions to discuss hydrometeorological investment and the future of weather, water, and climate.    

The event would focus on five strategic pillars- Strengthening partnerships and alliances coordination, mobilizing sustainable investment, advancing innovation and public private engagements, delivering value through user-centered services, and building sustainable hydrometeorological services.

The meeting marks the first time the alliance’s annual meeting will be held on African soil, offering a platform to showcase African leadership and address global priorities for strengthening hydrometeorological services.

Expected to speak at the 3-day event are Nigeria’s Minister for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, who is expected to declare the meeting open; His Excellency, Dr. Abdulla Ahmed Al Mondous, President, World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and Permanent Representative of the UAE with WMO who is also the Director General, National Centre of Meteorology  (NCM) and Prof. Charles Anosike, the Director General/CEO of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative with the WMO.

Other speakers include Idi Mukhtar Maiha, Hon. Minister of Livestock; Engr. Prof. Joseph Utsev, Hon. Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Sen. Dr. Aliyu Abdullahi, Minister of State, Agriculture and Food Security and Inna Audu, Special Adviser to the President on Humanitarian Affairs and Development Partners. Among others.

The Hydromet gathering will attract the leadership of the World Meteorological Organization alongside 17 member institutions of the Alliance for Hydromet Development. Participants will also include ministers, development banks, climate funds, United Nations agencies, private sector leaders, academics and users of weather, water and climate services.

The theme of this year’s meeting is “Partnerships, Innovation and Sustainable Investment in Weather, Water and Climate Services.”

The event offers Africa an opportunity to demonstrate leadership while supporting global efforts to improve climate resilience and disaster preparedness.

At the event, Nigeria will showcase its efforts to strengthen meteorological and hydrological services through NiMet. As host, the country will present practical examples of how national leadership can improve weather services while coordinating investments that benefit citizens. The Hydromet meeting will also demonstrate how better planning can reduce pressure on government funding through strategic partnerships.

According to the Director General/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, the event reflects Nigeria’s commitment to advancing climate services.

He noted that stronger weather services are vital for improving planning, protecting investments and supporting sustainable development across different sectors.

The Hydromet meeting is also expected to strengthen collaboration between governments, financial institutions and the private sector.

Hosting the Hydromet Annual Meeting 2026 further reinforces Nigeria’s position within the global meteorological community. It also highlights the country’s ambition to support innovation and climate resilience across Africa.
