Professor Hadiza Abdullahi Usman, the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Nguru, Yobe State, has been thrown into mourning following the deaths of her twin daughters, Dr. Hadiyah Usman Abdullahi and Aidah Usman Abdullahi, within four days of each other.

The sisters, who were both medical professionals—a medical doctor and a pharmacist—had reportedly lived with sickle cell disease.

Dr. Hadiyah, a medical doctor, had been receiving treatment at FMC Nguru for about seven days after suffering complications associated with a sickle cell crisis.

She died on Friday, October 2, 2026. Following funeral prayers at the Emir’s Palace, she was buried the same day.

At the time of Hadiyah’s death, her twin sister, Aidah, a pharmacist, was also receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital over similar health complications.

Aidah initially responded to treatment and was discharged from the hospital to continue her recovery at home.

However, tragedy struck again two days after Hadiyah’s burial.

Aidah reportedly visited her late twin sister’s graveside. Shortly after the visit, she became unwell and was rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

Despite efforts to save her, Aidah died on Sunday, October 4, 2026, leaving the family devastated by the loss of both daughters within days.

FMC Nguru subsequently confirmed Aidah’s death in a condolence message published on its official Facebook page, describing her as the second twin daughter of Professor Usman.

The deaths have sparked an outpouring of condolences from colleagues, friends and members of the medical community, who have mourned the loss of two young women who had dedicated their lives to healthcare.

The tragedy has also drawn attention to the devastating complications that sickle cell disease can cause, particularly during severe crises.

The Usman family is now faced with the heartbreaking loss of twin daughters who were both trained healthcare professionals and died just days apart.
