The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has won all 21 chairmanship positions and councillorship seats in the Anambra State local government elections held on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
The results were formally affirmed on Sunday by the Chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), Genevieve Osakwe, at the commission’s headquarters in Awka.
Osakwe declared that APGA candidates emerged victorious in all 21 local government areas, while the party also secured all councillorship positions across the state’s 362 electoral wards.
According to ANSIEC, APGA was the only political party to field candidates in 20 of the 21 local government areas, while the Young Progressives Party (YPP) participated only in Anambra East Local Government Area.
No other opposition party fielded candidates in the election.
Osakwe announced the scores and names of the APGA candidates individually, declaring them elected after they recorded the highest number of votes in their respective constituencies.
She said the results declared at the polling units on Saturday were carefully collated and analysed before being formally affirmed by the commission.
“The elections took place across 362 electoral wards and 21 local government areas in Anambra State and were conducted in a peaceful, free, fair, transparent and credible manner in line with the state electoral laws and guidelines,” Osakwe said.
She added that the commission scrutinised the results to ensure that there were no errors before confirming the outcome.
“We carefully collated and analysed the results to ensure that there were no mistakes. All the scores and the winners were announced at the polling units yesterday. We are here today to affirm the results as recorded,” she said.
The ANSIEC chairman commended residents for turning out to exercise their civic rights and praised security agencies for maintaining peace and order throughout the electoral process.
However, the YPP presented a different account of events in Anambra East, alleging that violence and irregularities forced it to boycott the election.
The party, which was the only opposition group to field candidates in the poll, had presented a chairmanship candidate and councillorship candidates for all 15 wards in Anambra East.
The party’s Local Government Collation Agent for Anambra East, Charles Ifediora, alleged that YPP agents and supporters were prevented from participating in the election after they assembled at their designated locations.
According to Ifediora, gunshots were heard in parts of the local government, while a female member of the party was allegedly hit by gunfire and taken to hospital for treatment.
“The situation is appalling. The election was scheduled to take place today, and when our people assembled as planned, all my agents were not allowed.
“There were several gunshots and one of our party members, a lady, was shot and taken to the hospital,” he said.
Ifediora accused the APGA-led state government of allegedly creating an atmosphere of fear that prevented opposition members from participating effectively in the election.
He specifically accused Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration of abetting what he described as a “sham election.”
The YPP agent further alleged that personnel attached to the Agunechemba and Udo Ga-Achi vigilante outfits were mobilised to frustrate the opposition’s participation.
He said the situation was particularly disturbing because the YPP had fielded candidates for all 15 councillorship positions in Anambra East, covering 241 polling units.
