Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has vowed to resign if President Bola Tinubu fails to win the FCT and Rivers State in the 2027 presidential election, linking his continued service in the cabinet to his ability to deliver electoral support for the President.
Wike made the declaration on Wednesday, September 30, during an engagement with the leadership and members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja.
The former Rivers State governor said he would not consider himself worthy of remaining in office if he failed to secure victory for Tinubu in the territory where he serves as minister.
“If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here,” Wike said.
“If I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT minister. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT.”
His declaration places his ministerial position at the centre of his campaign commitment to Tinubu, while extending that commitment to Rivers State, where he previously served two terms as governor.
Outlining his political strategy, Wike said his supporters were building a coalition across party lines to secure victory for the President and their preferred National Assembly candidates in the FCT.
He endorsed Philip Aduda for the Senate and two former area council chairmen for the House of Representatives. The two House candidates were not named in the account of his remarks.
“Let us be clear on direction: for the Presidency, it is Bola Ahmed Tinubu! For the Senate, Philip Aduda is a man of the people, unlike those who only appear on television. The two House of Representatives candidates we are supporting are also here. They are former area council chairmen.”
Wike reiterated that the arrangement involved politicians from different parties working towards a common electoral objective.
“In the FCT, we are running a unified coalition across parties to deliver results. If I cannot deliver FCT as minister, then I am not qualified to hold this office. We have a firm agreement, and today is the final affirmation,” he added.
The declaration comes amid disagreement between Wike and governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress over his Rainbow Coalition, which seeks to mobilise support for Tinubu while allowing participating politicians to support candidates from other parties in governorship and legislative elections.
APC governors have rejected that approach, insisting that their support would extend to the party’s candidates at all levels. Some APC state leaders have also called on Wike, a PDP politician serving in the APC-led administration, to formally join the ruling party.
Wike has maintained that supporting Tinubu’s re-election does not prevent the PDP or other participating parties from fielding candidates for other offices. His latest endorsements in the FCT reflect that position, with the minister reaffirming support for Tinubu while promoting a separate slate of legislative candidates.
