From the age of 10, Kiya started sewing and designing clothes as her hobby. As per her, she used to do it whenever she had free time and never thought she would continue it as her career. Thus, she even initially joined a medical college.

But even in her college days, she continued her hobby as she has said,

 When I went to college, even though I was studying medicine, I had my sewing machine there and would design and make clothes for my roommate and girls on my gymnastics team. My college coach, she was pregnant one year, and I made all her maternity clothes.”

Her decision to choose fashion designing as her career is connected to her husband, Mike Tomlin. Actually, her partner at that time started as a football coach. In this regard, she said,

 “Once I realized he wanted to coach, and what that all entailed, I realized that football and medicine really didn’t make for a happy family life.”

After a while, her now-husband Mike shifted to the University of Cincinnati as a football coach and that was the time when Kiya thought of fashion design as a career and revived her interest. She further told,

“They had a fashion-design program there, and he was an employee, so I was able to attend for free”.
