When People Say That Igbos Doesn’t Support The Yorubas, They Don’t Learn From History — Gani Adams

In the most recent election, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu garnered less than 10 percent of the total votes from the South East, leading some to speculate that the Igbos do not support the Yorubas. However, Gani Adams, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba Land, disputes this notion. 

Adams emphasized that Igbos have backed Yoruba politicians in the past, including the late MKO Abiola, who enjoyed support from numerous Igbos. He contends that politicians often exploit tribal sentiments to secure electoral victories and that people should look to history to recognize that Igbos have advocated for a unified Nigeria in the past. 

He cited individuals like Clement Nwankwo of the Eastern Mandate Union and Rear Admiral Ebitu Ukiwa, both of Igbo descent, who championed the Yoruba cause. 

In Adams’ own words, “It astonishes me when people assert that Igbos do not support Yorubas. Perhaps, they neglect to examine historical events. I remember the Eastern Mandate Union and its leader, Clement Nwankwo. He remained steadfast until the very end of the struggle, and I question whether he reaped any benefits from the current democratic system.”
