A UK‑based Nigerian, Anthony Adewale Sobogun, aged 61, has been sentenced to 28 years’ imprisonment by the Inner London Crown Court after being found guilty of 17 counts of historic sexual offences against two children over a 15‑year period.
According to a statement by the London Metropolitan Police, Sobogun, of Thistlewood Crescent, Croydon, committed multiple acts of sexual intercourse with a girl under 13 and rape of a child in the 1990s and early 2000s. The victims, who were known to him, endured prolonged abuse.
One victim disclosed that Sobogun accompanied her to an abortion clinic after she became pregnant with his child. Investigators corroborated her account with medical and counselling records. Sobogun was arrested on 2 July 2025 and later convicted following a victim‑centred investigation that relied on sensitive evidence gathering and video‑recorded interviews.
Detective Constable Charlotte Lockyer commended the courage of the victims, noting that their bravery ensured Sobogun’s conviction and prevented further harm. The victims, in a joint statement, stressed that abuse often thrives under fear and stigma, urging others to speak out: “Your voice matters, and you deserve to be heard, supported, and protected.”
The Metropolitan Police and Crown Prosecution Service were praised for their professional handling of the case, which underscores the UK judiciary’s commitment to securing justice for survivors of abuse, regardless of when the offences occurred.
In a related case, Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, another Nigerian national, was sentenced to life imprisonment by Leicester Crown Court for the murder of 56‑year‑old Nila Patel in June 2025, after crashing his car under the influence of cannabis and assaulting her.
