Two suspected kidnappers have been neutralised and a N15 million ransom demand thwarted following a joint security operation that rescued a kidnapped victim in Imo State, the Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed.
The victim, 29-year-old Ibeabuchi Adibenma, was abducted on Tuesday, 18 August, at approximately 7pm near Afor-Ogidi Market in Isiala Amaifeke community, Orlu Local Government Area. He was reportedly returning from Umuna market when armed assailants on two motorcycles intercepted his vehicle, forced him out, and conveyed him to an undisclosed location.
The kidnappers subsequently contacted his family and demanded N15 million for his release.
In a coordinated operation on 20 August, operatives of the DSS, alongside other security agencies and local vigilantes, stormed the kidnappers’ hideout in Ihioma Community, Orlu. The rescue mission resulted in the safe recovery of Adibenma, with two suspected members of the syndicate fatally neutralised during the encounter.
According to a statement issued by the DSS to journalists in Owerri on Sunday, two high-calibre weapons and ammunition were recovered from the suspects.
The rescued victim was placed in protective custody before being reunited with his family.
The DSS commended the collaborative efforts of all participating security forces and vigilante groups, describing the operation as a testament to ongoing strides in combating kidnapping and criminality across communities in Imo State.
