Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have rescued six abducted civilians in a daring operation in the Mandara Mountains, Borno State, following a fierce encounter with fleeing terrorists.
The victims, including women and children kidnapped during an earlier attack on Ngoshe community, were rescued in the early hours of May 1 while troops were returning from an overnight offensive mission.
Military sources said the rescue took place around Amuda, a notorious route used by terrorists for movement between Ngoshe and Gava.
The rescued victims include Zainab Idris, Fatima Abubakar, Maimuna Abdulrashid, and three children.
According to the military, the victims had been held in captivity since March 3 before escaping from a terrorist enclave.
Trouble started when terrorists attempted to recapture them.
“Troops came under sporadic fire from fleeing terrorists but responded decisively, forcing them to retreat,” the military said.
The military attributed the success to sustained offensives and air strikes that have weakened terrorist groups in the area.
“Intelligence shows the terrorists are now disorganised and desperate,” the statement added.
The victims were treated at a military facility before being reunited with their families in an emotional ceremony led by the Wali of Ngoshe, Alhaji Shuaibu Dabawa.
The military assured Nigerians that operations would continue until all terrorists are eliminated.
