How DSS Can Properly Handle Emefiele’s Case — Falana
Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana has advised the Department of State Services (DSS) to properly handle the case involving the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele to prevent it from being bungled.
In a statement on Sunday, Falana said the secret police should prosecute Emefiele for alleged terrorism financing which falls under its purview and hand him over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for prosecution for suspected money laundering and other graft accusations.
On Friday, President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele as the apex bank’s chief and directed that the bank’s Deputy Governor of tions, Folashodun Shonubi, resume office in an acting capacity.
On Saturday, the DSS confirmed that Emefiele is in its custody.
Falana, on Sunday, counselled the secret police not to mess the case involving the suspended CBN chief by prosecuting him for alleged money laundering and economic crimes which fall under the purview of the EFCC.
Babangida decries voters’ apathy
Nigeria’s former military president, Rtd. Gen. Ibrahim Babangida has urged Nigerian leaders to explore the gains of the June 12, 1993, presidential election to deepen democracy in the country.

Babangida stated this on Sunday while speaking through his media aide, Kassim Afegbua, on Nigeria’s democracy and the journey so far. “The gains of the June 12, 1993, presidential election have not been exploited by political leaders in succeeding elections in Nigeria. “It was adjudged the freest and fairest election in Nigeria, yet politicians have blatantly ignored that beauty; the beauty of credible elections.
“Remember, it was an election Nigerians came out en mass to choose their leaders, irrespective of their cultural/traditional and religious affiliations,” he said. The former president noted that although Nigeria’s democracy had recorded some growth, there were still many grounds to be covered.
Group backs Betara for Reps Speaker
With about 72 hours to the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly, a support organisation in the All Progressives Congress under the aegis of Progressive Support Group on Saturday charged the House of Representatives members-elect and Nigerians to reject attempts by the ruling party to impose a leadership on the legislature.
The organisation said the advice became necessary to avoid truncating of the nation’s democracy and pocketing of the parliament away from meeting their constituted roles to the electorate.
The spokesperson for the group, Silas Wettok, in a statement, called on the lawmakers to consider national interest of the country first, maintaining that Nigeria was bigger than any political group or individual.
Wettok urged members-elect to throw their weight behind the member representing Biu/Bayo/Shani Federal Constituency of Borno State, Hon. Muktar Aliyu Betara, for the position of Speaker in the 10th National Assembly.

A shopping complex along Ado-Afao Road in Ado Ekiti has been razed by fire.
Describing the situation as uncalled for, they appealed to Governor Biodun Oyebanji and well-meaning Nigerians to come to their aid.
The fire, which started in the early hours of Sunday, destroyed properties worth millions of naira as the complex was burnt down completely.
Some of the shopowners who spoke with DAILY POST expressed anger at the state fire service, as firefighters claimed they had no water for operation when contacted.
