TINUBU NOMINATES TEGBE AS MINISTER OF POWER

By Fatima Abdullahi

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has put forward the name of Mr Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe for appointment as Minister of Power, with the nomination now awaiting confirmation by the Senate.

The proposal, according to a statement issued by the State House, has been formally transmitted to the upper legislative chamber for screening in line with constitutional provisions.

Tegbe’s nomination follows the resignation of the former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who vacated the position to pursue elective office.

A native of Oyo State, Tegbe is described as a seasoned fiscal and economic reform expert, bringing over 35 years of experience across both the public and private sectors. He previously served as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa, where he spearheaded major initiatives in fiscal policy reform, governance, and institutional transformation. His professional background also includes advisory roles to government institutions and private organisations on regulatory frameworks, strategic reforms, and investment structuring.

He currently holds the position of Director General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), where he oversees efforts to deepen development cooperation between Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China. The partnership also facilitates collaboration with public sector stakeholders aimed at advancing economic and social development in line with Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) objectives.

Within the power sector, Tegbe has been involved in key regulatory and institutional reform engagements, including work with agencies such as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET).

The presidency noted that his nomination is expected to bolster ongoing reforms in the power sector, improve grid stability, and attract sustainable investment in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“The President expects the Minister-Designate, upon confirmation, to bring his extensive expertise to bear to advance critical reforms and deliver improved outcomes for Nigerians in the power sector,” the statement read.

The statement was signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, and dated April 30, 2026.
