Suspected ISIS Attack Rocks Adamawa Communities

A deadly attack on Guyaku and Telabala communities in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State has left at least 29 people dead, with the extremist group ISIL (ISIS) later claiming responsibility for the assault. The attack, which targeted a community football gathering, has been described as one of the most devastating recent incidents in the area.

According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers stormed the communities around 5pm on Sunday while youths and families were watching a football match at a primary school. The gunmen reportedly opened fire sporadically, causing panic and forcing people to flee for safety as casualties mounted.

Residents said the attackers deliberately struck at a time of high gathering, killing spectators and players alike, and also setting structures ablaze. A local resident, Musa Guyaku, said two people were killed in a hut that was later burned down during the attack, adding that the violence spread quickly through the community.

Beyond the killings, several properties including homes, motorcycles, and a church building were destroyed, leaving widespread devastation. Survivors have continued to flee the area, while families are mourning victims amid fears of further attacks in surrounding communities.

Adamawa State Governor Umaru Fintiri visited the affected areas and confirmed the death toll at about 29, describing the incident as deeply distressing. He assured residents of government efforts to strengthen security in collaboration with military and other agencies, while traditional leaders raised concerns about possible insider involvement aiding the attackers.
