“Shey na police they be?” – Boy questions officers after robbery victim was stabbed and suspect rescued

A young man has narrated the shocking moment he witnessed an alleged phone robbery that turned violent, leaving a victim stabbed multiple times while trying to take a photograph.

The witness claimed that members of the public almost apprehended one of the suspects before police officers arrived and took the suspect into custody.

According to the eyewitness, two young men reportedly attacked the victim, seized his mobile phone and repeatedly stabbed him before attempting to flee the scene.

He said one of the suspects managed to escape, while the other was cornered by residents before the arrival of the police.

Eyewitness questions police action

While recounting the incident, the young man said, “I was here just now and two boys rushed one man, took his phone when he was about to snap picture and stabbed him repeatedly. We were about to catch them. One ran away and the police arrived and rescued the criminal.” He explained that the suspect was taken away by the officers despite the anger of the crowd.

Expressing his frustration, he further said, “Shey na police they be? Instead of them to hear what we are saying they don’t want to release the criminal for us. Are they police? Are they not supposed to side with us and not the criminals?” His remarks reflected his dissatisfaction with how the situation was handled.

Incident sparks debate online

The incident has since generated reactions on social media, with many Nigerians discussing the role of law enforcement during violent crimes.

While some sympathised with the injured victim, others pointed out that police officers are expected to arrest suspects and ensure they face prosecution rather than hand them over to an angry mob.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the police regarding the incident or the condition of the stabbing victim.
