S’East Doesn’t Deserve Senate Presidency, They Didn’t Contribute To Tinubu’s Victory – Afegbua

As the tussle for the office of the Senate President continues to intensify among lawmakers ahead of the upcoming 10th National Assembly, former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, and ex-Commissioner for Information in Edo State, Kassim Afegbua has come out to insist that the APC should not consider the Southeast while zoning its slot for the third most powerful political office in the country.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE TV’s ‘Prime Time’ program a Wednesday night, Afegbua accused the southeast region of having an ‘entitlement mentality’ when it comes to the issue of power-sharing at the national level, even when the region did not contribute anything significant to the victory of President Bola Tinubu in the February 25 elections.

Going further, the former PDP chieftain argued that if any region deserves to have the office of the Senate President zoned to it, the South-South should take the slot because of the number of votes it delivered for Tinubu.

He said; “As far as the race for the senate presidency in the APC is concerned, the issue of what each zone delivered to the victory of President Bola Tinubu must be considered. When you have a Senator who delivered one hundred and thirty thousand votes to Tinubu, and you compare that to persons who couldn’t pull any votes to his victory in their region, who is more relevant?

You see, this sense of entitlement exhibited by the Igbos who are seeking the Senate Presidency should be discountenanced completely. Besides, the Southeast has produced five senate presidents in the past, and if you go all way back to 1999, they have occupied that office seven times. I honestly don’t want them to keep talking as if the Senate Presidency is their birthright. It is not. The South-South deserves it this time around.”
