Prominent Nigerian journalist and broadcaster, Oseni Rufai, has criticised Senator Remi Tinubu, wife of Bola Tinubu, over her recent remarks encouraging Nigerians to explore small-scale businesses such as akara, kulikuli and roasted corn as ways of improving their livelihoods.

Rufai, in a post shared on his official X handle, questioned the suggestion, arguing that if akara business is truly profitable, those promoting it should demonstrate its viability by engaging in it themselves.

“If akara is lucrative they should lead by example,” Rufai said in reaction to Remi Tinubu’s comments.

The journalist’s remark followed Remi Tinubu’s statement on the Renewed Hope Initiative, where she highlighted low-capital businesses as possible sources of income for Nigerians, particularly through empowerment programmes providing grants rather than loans.

Remi Tinubu had mentioned businesses such as frying akara, making kulikuli and roasting corn while discussing ways citizens could benefit from entrepreneurship opportunities despite economic challenges.

Reacting to the message, Rufai questioned whether encouraging Nigerians to depend on such small-scale ventures adequately addresses the wider economic difficulties facing citizens.

The broadcaster argued that leaders and policymakers should also demonstrate the effectiveness of the solutions they promote, especially at a time many Nigerians are dealing with rising costs and financial pressure.

Rufai’s comment has generated conversations around economic empowerment, government interventions and the kind of solutions required to tackle poverty and unemployment in the country.

The debate comes amid continued discussions on how government policies and empowerment programmes can create sustainable opportunities for Nigerians beyond survival-based businesses.

Rufai, known for his commentary on national issues, has continued to weigh in on governance, economic policies and issues affecting citizens.
